Arrangements Made by JNP for safe viewing of the Solar Eclipse of December 26, 2019 at J N Planetarium

The Solar Eclipse of December 26 will be a partial solar eclipse in Bengaluru, that is, about 90% of the sun’s disc will not be visible to the eye as the Moon passes in front of the disc. Whether the Sun’s disc is wholly or partially visible, viewing it with unaided eye has the risk of damaging the eye. J N Planetarium, Bengaluru has made arrangements for safe viewing of the eclipsed Sun from 8 am to about 11:15 am. The following arrangements have been made:

1. About five telescopes that project the sun’s image on to a screen. Viewers can follow all the stages of eclipse in the projected image.
2. Welder glass #14 through which Sun can be viewed directly
3. Image of the sun produced by a telescope fitted with a special filter known as Hα filter will be displayed on an LCD monitor
4. A 12’ X 6’ poster educating the general public on the fundamentals of solar eclipse will be displayed.
5. Models to explain the circumstances of an eclipse will be demonstrated and explained.
6. Some of the trained students will be involved in carrying out measurements during the eclipse.
Let us hope that we get clear skies and a clear disc of the Sun to enjoy this charming celestial spectacle!

We appeal to all the visitors to kindly exercise patience and discipline to enable us to conduct this programme smoothly and efficiently. We thank you in advance for your kind cooperation.
