Partial Solar Eclipse on 21st June 2020
The partial Solar Eclipse will be visible in Bengaluru on 21st June 2020 (Sunday) from 10:12 hrs to 13:31 hrs; the maximum will be at 11:47 hrs (around 40%). The eclipsing Sun should not be seen without protective and safety equipment.
Due to restrictions in force for Covid19, no arrangement is made for public to view the eclipse event from the campus of the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium. However, the Planetarium is making arrangements for online webcast of the partial Solar Eclipse. This can be seen at www. taralaya.org, our facebook and youtube channel subject to favourable weather condition.
JNP has made arrangements for goggles for public to safely view the eclipse. Interested persons can obtain these Eclipse Goggles from the Planetarium Book Stall against payment of Rs.35/- per pair. The sale will commence on 18th June 2020 (Thursday) and continue till stocks last or till Saturday. No sales on the day of Eclipse.

Arrangements made by JNP for safe viewing of the Solar Eclipse of December 26, 2019 at J N Planetarium
The Solar Eclipse of December 26 will be a partial solar eclipse in Bengaluru, that is, about 90% of the sun's disc will not be visible to the eye as the Moon passes in front of the disc. Whether the Sun's disc is wholly or partially visible, viewing it with unaided eye has the risk of damaging the eye. J N Planetarium, Bengaluru has made arrangements for safe viewing of the eclipsed Sun from 8 am to about 11:15 am. The following arrangements have been made:
- About five telescopes that project the sun's image on to a screen. Viewers can follow all the stages of eclipse in the projected image.
- Welder glass #14 through which Sun can be viewed directly
- Image of the sun produced by a telescope fitted with a special filter known as Hα filter will be displayed on an LCD monitor
- A 12' X 6' poster educating the general public on the fundamentals of solar eclipse will be displayed.
- Models to explain the circumstances of an eclipse will be demonstrated and explained.
- Some of the trained students will be involved in carrying out measurements during the eclipse.

Partial Lunar Eclipse on 17th July 2019
A partial Lunar Eclipse will occur on 17th July 2019. The Moon enters the dark region of the Earth's shadow (Umbra) at 01:31. Greatest at 03:01 am and ends at 04:29 am. A Lunar Eclipse can be observed with naked eye. Public can watch the phenomenon from their roof top. Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium has made arrangements to view this astronomical event through several telescopes on 17th July between 01:30 am and 04:30 am. Viewing can be done only if the sky is clear. Interested public may please check sky before coming to the planetarium.
Lecture on Eclipses
Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium is organising a lecture on "Eclipses" for general public on 25th, 26th and 27th July 2018. The concepts related to Eclipses will be discussed through models and experiments.

A Partial Lunar Eclipse is occurring on the night of August 7, 2017.
The eclipse begins at 22:52 pm reaches maximum at 23:50 and starts receding. The eclipse will be over at 00:48. This eclipse can be seen with naked eye. However, Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium (JNP) is making arrangements to view the eclipse through telescopes. Viewing of eclipse will be possible, only if the sky is clear. Interested public are requested to check sky conditions and then come to JNP for viewing through the telescopes.
On 9th January 2017, the bright star Rohini will be covered by the Moon for about half an hour from 6.30 pm to 7 pm. People may enjoy the sight with telescopes or even with naked eye. Viewing with telescopes will be arranged from 6 pm to 7.30 pm at the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium. Entry is Free.

Arrangements are made for the public to view comets, Solar eclipses and planetary transits. Portable telescopes are arranged in the open area and public watch events through these. During live coverage of such events happening elsewhere, video projectors are used to project the coverage on large screen for the public to see.
