SOW (Science over weekends) 2020-21

Students motivated towards a research career return to the planetarium after the short programs of summer vacation. They spend a few hours over the weekends in understanding a specific topic in greater depth. The sessions involve interactions, discussions, demonstrations, mathematical analysis, and visits to research institutes.

Weekend classes are conducted for high school and PUC Students. These are NOT tutorial classes that prepare students to face and excel in the examination. The principal aim of these classes is to provide a thorough understanding of scientific concepts through sessions that involve rigorous discussions, problem solving and experimentation which shape the students with right attitude towards scientific research.

Students of classes VIII to X attend two-hour sessions every Sunday between 10:30 am and 12:30 pm. The sessions usually commence on the last Sunday of June or the First Sunday of July and continue till the first Sunday of February. Each year, one topic that is prescribed in the high school syllabus in science is taken up for a detailed discussion. The thrust in these sessions is on the development of logical thinking and problem solving. The width and depth of the discussions are not limited by any syllabus. That renders it suitable for students of various degrees of learning abilities. ‘Newton’s Laws of Motion’, ‘Optics’, ‘Electricity’ and ‘Magnetism’ are some of the topics that have been discussed in this programme so that a student attending these classes for three consecutive years will learn all the topics.
Maximum Number of students : 40

For PUC Students :

Sessions in physics are held over Sundays for interested PUC students. Again, these are NOT to prepare them for entrance tests for professional courses. The physics topics are discussed at a level followed by the textbook, 'Fundamentals of Physics' by Resnick and Halliday. Usually, mechanics and waves – two very important and key topics in physics - are discussed with special emphasis on problem solving.

Maximum Number of students : 15
Duration : July to February
Timings : 2:30 pm
